Nephrolepis exaltata, also known as the sword fern or Boston fern, is a species of evergreen fern native to the Americas. It can reach up to 1.5 meters in height and has long, compound leaves with serrated edges. This plant is commonly grown as a houseplant and is hardy in USDA zones 9-11. It prefers moist, shady conditions and is tolerant to drought. There are several cultivars of Nephrolepis exaltata, including 'Bostoniensis' and 'Teddy Junior', and some have received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. However, a related species, Nephrolepis cordifolia, is considered an invasive species in some areas. In South Africa, Nephrolepis exaltata is also classified as an invasive alien plant and may require a permit to import or grow.
