Polystichum lonchitis, also known as northern hollyfern, is a species of fern found in various parts of the Northern Hemisphere. It has stiff, glossy green fronds that grow up to 60 centimeters long and are pinnate with lance-shaped leaflets. This slow-growing plant is typically found in moist, shady, rocky mountain habitats, and is well-adapted to calcareous soil. It is a circumpolar boreal and montane species, and can be found in places like Eurasia, Alaska, Greenland, and mountainous regions of central North America. In the British Isles, it is mostly found in Scotland and the western parts of England, Wales, and Ireland, with a single location in Northern Ireland. Due to its rarity in Northern Ireland, it is considered a priority species there.
