Polystichum australiense, also known as the harsh shield fern, is a plant native to New South Wales, Australia. Its genus name, Polystichum, comes from the Greek words for "many rows," referring to the numerous rows of sori (spore-producing structures) on its fronds. The species name, australiense, refers to its location in Australia. One unique characteristic of this fern is the growth of bulbils on the end of its fronds. Its sori are circular with a brown covering, and the stem is moderately scaly. The fronds are tough and have distinct aristate (pointed) margins. This fern is typically found in warmer areas, unlike its relative Polystichum proliferum, which prefers mountain habitats. The first recorded specimen was collected at Garie Beach and was first described in a botanic publication in 1954 by Mary Tindale.
