Polystichum acrostichoides, also known as Christmas fern, is a perennial, evergreen fern native to eastern North America. It is commonly found in moist and shady habitats, such as woodlands, stream banks, and rocky slopes. The name "Christmas fern" comes from its ability to retain its green color during the winter months. This fern has a tufted growth habit and can form colonies, but is often found growing alone or in small groups. Its fronds are dark green, leathery, and have 20 to 35 pairs of pinnae with spiny edges. The fertile fronds, which produce spores, are smaller and located at the tip of the frond. Christmas fern is popular in gardens due to its easy cultivation and evergreen nature. It is also beneficial for erosion control on steep slopes. This fern can be parasitized by a fungus, and can hybridize with other fern species.
