Dryopteris inaequalis is a species of fern found in tropical and southern Africa, including Madagascar. It can be found in countries such as Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, specifically in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal regions. This fern grows on forest floors and along forest margins at middle to high altitudes. It has a creeping rhizome and a stipe that can reach up to 80 cm in length. The lamina, or leaf, can grow up to 90 x 33 cm and has a pointed tip. The pinnae, or leaflets, are up to 33 x 16 cm and are angled at more than 50 degrees from the rachis, or main stem. As the plant matures, the rachis becomes smooth. There are two varieties of this fern, one with black scales on the rhizome and stipe found in Tanzania to Zambia, and one with brown scales found in Zambia to South Africa.
