Dryopteris campyloptera, also known as the mountain wood fern, is a large American fern found in higher elevations and latitudes. It was previously known as Dryopteris spinulosa var. americana and has been mistakenly referred to as D. austriaca and D. dilatata. This fern is characterized by a unique feature where the bottom innermost pinnule on the basal pinnae spans the first two top innermost pinnules on the same pinnae. It is a tetraploid species that is a hybrid of Dryopteris intermedia and Dryopteris expansa, and closely resembles the latter. While it is only found above 3800 feet in West Virginia, it is a common part of the flora in northern New England.
