Woodwardia radicans, also known as the chain fern, is a species of fern found in Macaronesia, southwestern Europe, and parts of Italy and Crete. It is an evergreen plant with arching fronds that can grow up to 1.8 meters tall and 2 meters wide. Its pinnae have curved, finely-toothed segments and its name comes from the linked sori on the undersides of its fronds. This fern is often grown as an ornamental and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in the UK. However, it is not as hardy as its cousin, Woodwardia unigemmata, and may require protection from frost in colder areas. Its specific epithet, radicans, refers to the rooting plantlets that appear at the tips of its fronds.
