Athyrium filix-femina, also known as the lady fern or common lady-fern, is a large and feathery species of fern found in temperate regions of Asia, Europe, North Africa, Canada, and the USA. It is commonly found in damp and shady woodland areas and is often grown for decorative purposes. Its name comes from the way its reproductive structures are hidden on the underside of its fronds, giving it a feminine appearance. This fern is now divided into three species: A. filix-femina, A. angustum, and A. asplenioides. It has light yellow-green fronds that can grow up to 90 centimeters long and are 3-pinnate. The spores are yellow or dark brown, depending on the species. A. filix-femina is very resilient and can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C. It is also edible, with Native Americans using both the fiddleheads and rhizomes in their cooking. Many cultivars of this fern have been developed for gardening, with some receiving the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
