Asplenium scolopendrium, also known as the hart's-tongue fern, is an evergreen fern found in the Northern Hemisphere. Its unique feature is its undivided, strap-shaped fronds, which resemble the tongue of a male red deer. It was first described by Linnaeus in 1753 and belongs to the "Phyllitis subclade" of the "Phyllitis clade". It has one variety and two subspecies, with minor morphological differences. A. scolopendrium is commonly found in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and has been introduced to the Falkland Islands. In North America, it is found in scattered populations, mainly in sinkhole pits and limestone caves. The unique dispersal of this fern has caught the attention of botanists. It grows in neutral, calcium-rich, and/or lime-rich substrates under deciduous hardwood canopies. Despite being more common in Europe, it is still declining in certain areas and is listed as "Vulnerable" or "Endangered" in some countries. A. scolopendrium is often grown as an ornamental plant and has medicinal uses in folk medicine.
