Asplenium azoricum is a unique fern that is a hybrid of the Macaronesian ancestral fern Asplenium anceps. It is a strict endemic species found exclusively in the Azores, with coriaceous fronds and a thick, dark garnet-colored rachis. One of its distinguishing features is a small atrium at the base of its pinnae, which is shared with other descendants of A. anceps. This fern can be found growing among stones and volcanic rocks in the Azores, with its phenotype changing depending on the amount of sunlight it receives. It is distributed across all nine islands of the Azores and has also been found to hybridize with other fern species, such as Asplenium trichomanes.
