Osmundastrum is a genus of ferns in the Osmundaceae family, with one living species, Osmundastrum cinnamomeum, also known as the cinnamon fern. It is found in the Americas and eastern Asia, growing in wet areas like swamps and woodlands. The plant has separate fertile and sterile fronds, with the fertile fronds turning a cinnamon color as they mature. Osmundastrum cinnamomeum is one of the oldest living plant species, with a fossil record dating back to the Late Cretaceous period. It forms large colonies and its root mass is used as a substrate for other plants. The cinnamon fern is the only living species in the genus, but there are some fossils that may also belong to this genus. It has been used by Native American tribes for food and medicinal purposes.
