Botrychium paradoxum, also known as peculiar moonwort, is a unique species of fern found in North America. It is mainly found in scattered locations in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Unlike other moonworts, this plant only produces one fertile frond with two segments that bear spores. It can grow up to 15 centimeters tall and relies on mycorrhizae for energy instead of photosynthesis due to the absence of a sterile frond. This fern is typically found in snowfields and western red cedar forests in the montane, subalpine, and alpine zones.
