Alsophila insulana, also known as Cyathea insulana, is a tree fern found in New Guinea. It typically grows in mossy forests and ravines at elevations between 750-1600 m. The tree fern can reach heights of 8-10 m with a trunk diameter of 14 cm. Its fronds can be bi- or tripinnate and can grow up to 3 m in length, forming a wide crown. The stipe, or stem, of the fern has thick spines and scales, which can be small and pale brown or large and glossy brown with delicate edges. The fern produces sori, or spore-bearing structures, near the midvein of its fertile pinnules. These sori are protected by thin, pale indusia. The species name, insulana, is derived from the Latin word for "island" and refers to its native habitat in New Guinea.
