Alsophila engelii, also known as Cyathea elongata, is a type of tree fern found in Venezuela and Colombia at high altitudes. It can grow up to 11 meters tall and has pinnate fronds that are typically 2-3 meters long. The trunk is erect and the rachis and stipe are brown with basal tan scales. The sori, which contain spores, are found in small groups near the base of the pinnule midvein and are covered by cup-like structures called indusia. This species was first described in 1869 by Gustav Karsten and was later given the name Alsophila engelii by Rolla Tryon in honor of Franz Engel, who collected the type material in Venezuela. This name was chosen because the original name, Alsophila elongata, was already in use for a different species.
