Alsophila colensoi, also known as the creeping tree fern, is a species of tree fern native to New Zealand. It can be found in the southern part of the North Island and south to Stewart Island, typically growing in damp areas near the tree line. The fern has a prostrate trunk, but can sometimes be erect and can reach up to 1 meter in height. Its fronds are tripinnate and can grow to be 1.5 meters long. The rachis and stipe are slender and covered in brown scales. Sori, or spore-producing structures, are found in two rows on each side of the fertile pinnule midvein and do not have indusia. In cultivation, this fern requires rich soil, shade, and plenty of moisture. It thrives in cooler regions due to its natural habitat in montane forests. The species is named after William Colenso, a missionary and botanist who lived in New Zealand in the 19th century.
