Alsophila alpina, also known as Cyathea alpicola, is a tree fern found in central Sumatra. It grows in montane rain forests at an altitude of 2000-2750m and can reach a height of over 5m. The fronds of this species are bi- or tripinnate and can grow up to 2-3m in length. They tend to stay on the plant even after withering, forming a skirt-like appearance around the trunk. The stipe of this species is spiny and covered in a woolly layer of scales. There are two forms of scales, one with dark glossy brown color and the other with small, brown and finely fringed scales. The sori, or spore-producing structures, are covered by thin and fragile indusia and are found near the midvein of fertile pinnules. The closest relative of A. alpicola is believed to be Alsophila polycarpa, which lacks spines. Other closely related species include Alsophila macropoda and Alsophila magnifolia.
