The genus Manoao (Molloy) is placed in the conifer family Podocarpaceae and comprises a single species, Manoao colensoi, recognized as the type by original designation. It is endemic to New Zealand, occurring from lowland to montane rainforest, subalpine scrub, and fellfield, with a latitudinal span from the North Island to Southland and Stewart Island, and a typical altitudinal range extending from near sea level to approximately 1200 meters. Based on these criteria, the species richness is approximately one.

Manoao can be recognized by its dimorphic foliage: juvenile leaves are soft, needle-like, and spreading, whereas adult leaves are reduced to minute, scale-like structures closely appressed to the branchlets. Branchlets are slender and often drooping, and the plant forms small to medium-sized trees with a columnar to conical habit. The reproductive structure is a solitary ovule borne on a short peduncle surrounded by a fleshy receptacle that becomes orange to red at maturity; the epimatium is fully closed, forming a seed-like structure with a pronounced ridge. Seedlings frequently retain juvenile foliage for extended periods, and mature individuals exhibit characteristic grey-green, finely ridged branchlet systems.

The center of diversity and endemism is New Zealand. Typical habitats include podocarp–broadleaf forests, often along stream margins and in shaded gullies, and scrub on margins or open sites at higher elevations, where the species contributes to canopy understorey or emergent layers. Its broad latitudinal and elevational distribution reflects a generalist ecological profile across cool temperate forests.

Intrinsic biology is not fully resolved; pollination and dispersal remain undocumented in the available sources. A base chromosome number of 2n=18 is recorded for Manoao colensoi, reflecting podocarp norms. The species is a slow-growing, shade-tolerant component of forest dynamics.

Taxonomy and phylogeny remain a point of discussion. The monotypic genus Manoao is accepted in some checklists and floras, with Dacrycarpus dacrydioides treated as a synonym (WFO, 2024; GBIF, 2024; Molloy, 1995). Alternatively, molecular and morphological work has been interpreted to support inclusion within Dacrycarpus, making Manoao colensoi the correct name under that treatment (WFO, 2024; GBIF, 2024; Molloy, 1995). Field recognition focuses on the combination of adult scale-leaved branchlets and the solitary epimatium-enclosed seed on a fleshy receptacle.

Human relevance is modest: the species is occasionally cultivated for its graceful, pendulous juvenile foliage and is used as a small ornamental where suited to cool, moist conditions. It is not a significant timber species and has not been reported as invasive.

Conservation and outlook are generally stable, though localized threats arise from habitat fragmentation and browsing. Further research into reproductive ecology, seed dispersal, and fine-scale population genetics would improve conservation planning for this New Zealand endemic.
