Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Targionia is the sole accepted genus of the liverwort family Targionaceae in the Marchantiopsida (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024), historically circumscribed to include only the type T. hypophypha (often cited as T. hypophylla; WFO, 2024). It is a small, thallose liverwort with a rosette or cushion habit and air pores that lack the barrel-shaped ring typical of Marchantia. Thalli are dorsiventral, usually less than 1 cm wide, with conspicuous marginal “purse-like” involucres housing the reproductive organs; gemmae are absent. The sporophyte forms a short capsule with elaters, and the species is dioicous, producing male and female plants on separate gametophytes (Smith et al., 2022).
The genus is cosmopolitan in temperate regions and extends into subtropical zones in suitable habitats, including open, calcareous rock faces, roadside cuts, cliff ledges, mortar joints of stone walls, and seasonally damp pavements at low to moderate elevations (Smith et al., 2022). Populations thrive where bryophyte mats remain moist yet well-ventilated, often on calcareous or man-made substrates (Longton, 1992).
Pollination is presumed to occur via water transport of sperm to archegonia; spore dispersal appears typical of most liverworts, through passive release from the capsule (Longton, 1992). Base chromosome number has not been consistently documented across global treatments (Crandall-Stotler & Longton, 2009).
- Targionia* is monotypic in modern practice (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024), and it has not been subject to recent subgeneric recircumscriptions. Its systematic position has, however, been challenged: molecular phylogenetic studies place the Targionia lineage within Sauteriaceae as sister to Sauteria (He-Nygrén et al., 2006; Forrest et al., 2006), while many checklists retain Targionaceae (POWO, 2024). This discrepancy reflects the limited taxon sampling and modest support in some analyses, and a cautious synthesis is that the generic concept is robust, but its higher-level placement remains unresolved.
The genus has no direct economic or horticultural significance and is not considered a crop, timber source, or invasive weed. It is primarily of interest to bryologists and conservationists as a component of calcicolous ground-layer communities. As urban development and limestone quarrying modify its habitats, ongoing bryofloristic surveys will be valuable for tracking local changes in occupancy and abundance.
