Riccia (L.) is a thalloid liverwort in the family Ricciaceae, order Marchantiales. It comprises roughly 150–200 species worldwide (Söderström et al., 2016) and occurs on all continents, from temperate grasslands to tropical wetlands (POWO, 2024). The type species, Riccia glauca L., anchors the name.

The genus forms dorsiventral thalli that become rosettes or irregular mats. A dorsal epidermis bears small, often blackened pores opening into air chambers. Ventral scales are reduced, and rhizoids are smooth. Sexual organs lie on the upper surface; the sporophyte is a reduced capsule that splits longitudinally, releasing trilete spores (Long et al., 2022). The absence of true leaves and the extensive air‑pore system separate Riccia from other liverwort families.

Species richness is highest in temperate Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, with endemic radiations in Australia, New Zealand, and the Mediterranean basin (WFO, 2024). Plants grow on moist, often disturbed soils, from cultivated fields and rice paddies to temporary pools and riverbanks, typically at low to mid‑elevations (up to 2 500 m). Their ability to colonize anthropogenic sites aids global spread, but some endemics remain confined to specific wetlands.

Sexual reproduction is dioecious; spores are wind‑dispersed and long‑lived. Asexual propagation occurs through thallus fragmentation, especially in aquatic habitats. Chromosome counts consistently show a base number of x = 8 (Jóhansen & Ochyra, 1992), a trait that distinguishes Riccia from most other Ricciaceae.

Molecular phylogenies confirm Riccia as monophyletic within Ricciaceae and show historic subgeneric groups (e.g., Riccia subg. Vesicularia) lack strong support (Long et al., 2022). Modern treatments therefore treat these as informal morphotypes (Söderström et al., 2016). The Kew‑led World Flora Online and POWO databases retain the broad genus; proposals to split it into smaller genera have not been widely adopted.

Beyond research, Riccia fluitans is a popular aquarium plant for its rapid growth and floating mats, while some terrestrial species are minor agricultural weeds. The genus is not used for timber or medicines.

Most Riccia species are considered secure, but habitat loss through wetland drainage and climate change poses risks to narrowly endemic taxa. Continued taxonomic clarity and targeted monitoring of localized populations will be essential for long‑term conservation.
