Approximately three species are recognized worldwide, with Blasia pusilla L. serving as the type species. The genus exhibits a cosmopolitan distribution across temperate and boreal regions of both hemispheres, occurring in moist to wet habitats including stream banks, rock crevices, and disturbed soil sites in forests and mountainous areas.
Blasia is characterized by its distinctive dorsiventral thallus, typically 3-8 mm wide, with conspicuous ventral scales and prominent, cup-shaped gemma cups that contain specialized propagules called gemmae. The thallus margins often bear small, slime papillae, while the upper surface displays a reticulate pattern of air chambers visible as a honeycomb-like network. Reproductive structures include terminal antheridia and archegonia, with sporophyte development occurring within involucres. The capsule opens by four valves, and spores are typically 16-16 µm in diameter with distinctive ornamentation.
Species diversity concentrates in temperate regions, with centers of diversity in Asia, Europe, and North America. Blasia pusilla shows the broadest distribution, while Blasia macounii primarily occurs in North America, and Blasia bisulcata has a more restricted distribution. The genus typically inhabits calcareous substrates at elevations ranging from lowland to alpine zones, often occupying microhabitats with constant moisture and moderate shade.
Reproduction occurs through both sexual and asexual means, with gemma production in specialized cups providing efficient vegetative propagation. The life cycle follows the typical alternation of generations characteristic of liverworts. Chromosome counts reported for Blasia pusilla consistently show n = 9, with 2n = 18 documented across multiple populations.
Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have supported the monophyly of Blasiaceae, though some taxonomic uncertainty remains regarding species delimitation within Blasia. Alternative treatments recognizing additional taxa have been proposed (Söderström et al., 2016; Crandall-Stotler et al., 2009), highlighting ongoing revisionary work needed in this group.
Ecologically, Blasia species contribute to soil stabilization and moisture retention in forest ecosystems, though they lack significant economic importance beyond their role in bryophyte community dynamics.
