Suggest a correction!Pleurozia (Dumort.) is a paleotropical liverwort genus in the family Pleuroziaceae (order Pleuroziales), with approximately 17 species that are distributed in Southeast Asia, Malesia, and the western Pacific (Söderström et al., 2016; WFO, 2024). The type species is Pleurozia purpurea, a boreal and subarctic element. Plants are robust, usually prostrate to ascending, with differentiated, two-lobed leaves that often have a conduplicate base and a characteristic ventral lobule forming a sac or pocket; stems may be winged and are typically pubescent. The leaf cells are thick-walled and usually bear trigones; setae are often smooth and capsules are spheric with bispiral elaters.
Diversity is centered in Malesian and Southeast Asian montane cloud forests, with fewer taxa extending to the Himalayas, southern China, and islands of the western Pacific (Söderström et al., 2016; Crandall-Stotler et al., 2009). Pleurozia gigantea and Pleurozia conchifolia represent the larger forms, while P. purpurea represents the boreal outlier. Typical habitats include humid, shaded banks, mossy rocks, and tree bases or trunks in high-elevation forests. Spore dispersal is the main reproductive strategy; specialized vegetative dispersal is not well documented.
Chromosome reports exist for several species (e.g., P. purpurea), but counts have varied and require consolidation from recent karyotype work, so a base number is not fixed here. No traditional sectional or subgeneric scheme is consistently applied, and recent floristic and regional treatments support a broadly consistent generic circumscription without widely adopted intrageneric ranks (Söderström et al., 2016; WFO, 2024). The status of Pleurozia and its closest relatives versus other pleuroziaceous genera remains well supported by morphology and recent phylogenies (Crandall-Stotler et al., 2009; Vanderpoorten et al., 2010), and the name is stable in global checklists (POWO, 2024).
Human relevance is limited to horticultural interest for distinctive forms in specialist moss/fern cultivation; there are no major crops, timber products, or invasive issues. Conservation concerns primarily relate to habitat sensitivity to disturbance in cloud forests and to under-collection in biodiversity inventories. Pleurozia remains a key element of paleotropical epiphytic and epilithic liverwort communities, with a stable taxonomic outlook and active floristic documentation across its range.
