Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Saccobasis (H.Buch) is a small leafy liverwort genus in the family Cephaloziaceae (Söderström et al., 2015). About five species are currently accepted (World Flora Online, 2024). The genus occurs throughout the temperate‑boreal zone of the Northern Hemisphere, with a concentration of diversity in the Sino‑Himalayan region (Grolle, 1976).
The gametophyte is prostrate to ascending, with stems 2–6 mm long and irregularly branched. Leaves are succubously inserted, ovate to lanceolate, usually bilobed or trilobed, and bear a conspicuous hyaline papilla at the apex. Underleaves are small, bifid or absent. The perianth is tubular and bears a distinctive basal sac from which the generic name derives; the sac terminates in a short beak. Setae are short and erect; the capsule is globose, dehiscing by longitudinal valves. These features collectively distinguish Saccobasis from the closely related Cephalozia, which lacks a pronounced basal sac (Grolle, 1976).
Most species occupy moist, shaded, calcareous substrates in montane forests, while one taxon extends into lowland floodplains. The genus reaches its highest local richness in the Himalaya, where four of the five species are recorded (Grolle, 1976). In Europe, only the European taxon is widespread, whereas the Asian taxa display a disjunct Sino‑Japanese distribution (Söderström et al., 2015).
Sexual reproduction depends on water for sperm transport, a pattern characteristic of liverworts (Crandall‑Stotler & Long, 1994). Capsules release small, wind‑dispersed spores; vegetative propagation via fragmentation also occurs.
Historically Saccobasis was treated as a subgenus of Cephalozia (Grolle, 1976), but recent molecular phylogenies consistently resolve a distinct Saccobasis clade within Cephaloziaceae (Váňa et al., 2020). Some authors retain a broad concept of Cephalozia and consider Saccobasis a synonym (Söderström et al., 2015). Global checklists presently recognize the generic rank (World Flora Online, 2024), although taxonomic stability remains a point of ongoing discussion.
The genus lacks major commercial value; it appears only in specialized bryophyte horticultural guides as a minor ornamental curiosity. Its modest size and relatively inconspicuous appearance limit its appeal to specialists, who cultivate it primarily for taxonomic studies.
Habitat loss and climate change threaten several regional populations, and the absence of formal IUCN assessments underscores a conservation data gap. Continued field surveys and high‑resolution phylogenetics will be essential to refine species limits and prioritize protection measures.
