Tetralophozia is a small genus of leafy liverworts in the family Anastrophyllaceae, comprising approximately twenty to twenty-five species with a global boreal-to-alpine distribution. The type species is Chandonanthus setiformis Gottsche, the same taxon that once bore the name Tetralophozia setiformis before formal generic recircumscription. The genus is primarily northern, reaching high latitudes and elevations across Eurasia and the Americas.

Morphologically, Tetralophozia bears compact, erect to ascending shoots with leaves that are (2–)3-lobed and often bear a characteristic terminal hook or filiform apex; underleaves are absent and the shoot axis is dorsiventral. Stipules may occur as small, paired appendages. The perianth is sharply keeled, with calyptra retained within, and the capsule opens by four valves. Oil bodies are small and numerous, and cortical tissue shows the typical hepatics cell pattern. Perianth shape and the terminal leaf lobe morphology are diagnostically useful for distinguishing Tetralophozia from superficially similar genera such as Anastrophyllum and Lophozia.

Species richness peaks in East Asia and in the North American Pacific Northwest, with numerous local endemics in Japan, the Himalaya–southern China arc, and western North America. Plants occur in cool, moist habitats on acidic rock, soil banks, and cliff crevices in subalpine to alpine zones, typically above 1000–1500 meters, often associated with late snowbeds and micro-refugia. Continental disjunctions between Asia and North America are evident, reflecting post-glacial persistence and dispersal along montane corridors.

Intrinsic biology is typical of boreal liverworts: sexual reproduction with well-formed perianths is documented for several species, while asexual propagules are variably present; base chromosome numbers are not consistently reported in standard references. Reproductive output often tracks short growing seasons, and plants may persist as long-lived perennial mats.

Taxonomically, Tetralophozia has been treated variably: as a separate genus within the Anastrophyllaceae (Söderström et al., 2016; 2023; WFO, 2024) or, in earlier treatments, as part of a broader Lophozia sensu lato in Lophoziaceae (Potemkin, 1999). Recircumscription by Söderström et al. (2013) separated it from Anastrophyllum s.l., and a subsequent reassessment (Söderström et al., 2022) reduced the number of accepted species, though circumscriptions differ among floristic treatments. These differences primarily concern the delimitation of the T. setiformis complex in Eurasia and North America.

Human relevance is minor; the genus is not widely cultivated but contributes to cool-rock bryophyte assemblages valued by enthusiasts. Some taxa are considered sensitive to warming-driven habitat shifts at alpine treeline. While some species are localized and fragmented, data completeness remains uneven (GBIF, 2024). Continued integrative work to resolve species boundaries and distribution baselines will be essential for informing conservation priorities as climate-driven range shifts accelerate in alpine systems.
