Genus Cryptolophocolea in Family Lophocoleaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Cryptolophocolea L.Söderstr., Crand.-Stotl., Stotler & Váňa is a small genus of leafy liverworts placed in the family Lophocoleaceae (order Jungermanniales) (Söderström et al., 2016). Approximately 12–15 species are currently accepted (Crandall‑Stotler & Stotler, 2020). The genus exhibits a predominantly Australasian distribution, with the highest richness in New Zealand, Tasmania and southeastern Australia, and extends through Malesia to New Guinea and, less commonly, to the Neotropics (Chile, Argentina) (GBIF, 2024; WFO, 2024). Its members occupy humid, shaded microhabitats on soil, rock outcrops or decaying wood in lowland to montane forest, usually at elevations from sea level to 1 500 m (GBIF, 2024). The type species, as designated in the original description, remains Cryptolophocolea.
Morphologically Cryptolophocolea can be distinguished by a combination of succubous leaf insertion, ovate‑lanceolate leaves that are entire or shallowly lobed, and a well‑developed, deeply bifid underleaf that is often adpressed to the stem (Crandall‑Stotler & Stotler, 2020). The perianth is a smooth, cylindrical tube lacking the wing‑like keels characteristic of many Lophocolea species; it is surrounded by a single row of involucral bracts. Gametophyte stems commonly possess a central strand of water‑conducting cells, a feature that supports the placement within Lophocoleaceae (Crandall‑Stotler & Stotler, 2020).
Species richness is concentrated in New Zealand and Tasmania, where several narrow endemics are known, while the Malesian component shows a more disjunct pattern (WFO, 2024). The genus exhibits a classic Gondwanan distribution, with few taxa reaching South America, suggesting an ancient diversification on the southern supercontinent (Söderström et al., 2016). Ecological studies remain limited, but the plants are believed to rely on water‑mediated spore dispersal and, where present, on vegetative fragmentation for local spread.
Taxonomically, Cryptolophocolea was erected to accommodate a clade of former Lophocolea taxa resolved by molecular phylogenies (Crandall‑Stotler & Stotler, 2020). Most authors accept the genus as distinct, although Hentschel et al., 2019 retain a broad Lophocolea concept for several of these taxa, highlighting ongoing debate over generic limits. The genus currently lacks formal subgeneric divisions.
Humans interact with Cryptolophocolea primarily through its occasional use in decorative terrarium and moss‑garden collections, but it has no recognized economic or medicinal significance. Conservation concerns focus on habitat loss from forest clearance and climate change, compounded by the scarcity of herbarium records for many species; comprehensive IUCN assessments are lacking. Future work should prioritize targeted field surveys and molecular clarification to resolve species boundaries and inform protection strategies.
