Pinus × sondereggeri, also known as Sonderegger pine or bastard pine, is a naturally occurring hybrid between loblolly pine and longleaf pine. It was first described by H. H. Chapman in 1922 and named after its discoverer, V. H. Sonderegger. This hybrid pine is typically found in small groups where the two parent species overlap in range. Its characteristics are a mix of both loblolly and longleaf pines, with heavy limbs and long-needled foliage. However, it is not resistant to fusiform rust like longleaf pine. One way to distinguish Sonderegger pine from longleaf pine is by its striped brown bud, as longleaf pine has a white bud. This hybrid pine also has significant height growth in its first year and can easily be identified in plantings of longleaf pine. While it may have superior qualities compared to its parents, there are no significant differences in wood properties. Overall, Pinus × sondereggeri is a unique and interesting hybrid pine found in the southern United States.
