The Torrey pine is a rare and critically endangered species of pine tree found only in coastal San Diego County and on Santa Rosa Island in California, United States. It is named after American botanist John Torrey and is endemic to the California coastal sage and chaparral ecoregion. The tree grows up to 17 meters tall and has long needles in groups of five, with stout cones containing edible pine nuts. There are two subspecies, distinguished by their characteristics and distribution. The tree's native habitat is coastal sage scrub, and it relies on animals for seed dispersal. The pine nuts were once eaten by the Kumeyaay tribe. Despite being endangered in the wild, the Torrey pine is often planted as an ornamental tree and has been considered for forestry use in other countries. It is also a local icon in San Diego County, with many landmarks and businesses named after it. The total population of the Torrey pine is estimated to be around 3,000 individuals, with a slow decline in numbers due to various factors. The tree is protected by a city tree ordinance in Del Mar.
