Pinus taiwanensis, also known as the Taiwan red pine, is a type of conifer found only in Taiwan. It is closely related to the Japanese Pinus luchuensis and Chinese P. hwangshanensis, and is sometimes considered a subspecies of the former. There are two varieties of this species, P. taiwanensis var. fragilissima and P. taiwanensis var. taiwanensis. This tree can grow up to 35 meters tall with a diameter of 80 centimeters. Its needles grow in bundles of two and its cones are 6-7 cm long. It is commonly found in the Central Mountain Range at altitudes of 750-3,000 meters and is often seen in pure stands.
