Pinus patula, also known as patula pine or Mexican weeping pine, is a tree native to the highlands of Mexico. It can grow up to 30 meters tall and is found at elevations between 1,800 and 2,700 meters above sea level. While it cannot withstand very low temperatures, it is moderately drought-tolerant and can thrive in areas with an average annual rainfall of 750 to 2000 mm. This tree has been introduced to various countries, including Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea, and Hawaii, where it is replacing native grasslands. It is also cultivated in other countries such as Brazil, South Africa, India, and Argentina for forestation purposes. Pinus patula is also grown as an ornamental tree in the United Kingdom and has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The timber of this tree is pale-pink to salmon in color and has a distinct aniseed smell when freshly cut. Taxonomically, there are two varieties of Pinus patula - var. patula and var. longipedunculata.
