Pinus greggii, also known as Gregg's pine, is a small to medium-sized pine tree native to eastern Mexico. It has a distinct appearance with an open crown and long, slender branches. The tree produces bundles of three needles that are approximately 11 cm long, and its cones are clustered in groups of 5-10. The species was first described by George Engelmann in 1868 and is named after American explorer and naturalist Josiah Gregg. Pinus greggii is found in two distinct regions in Mexico and has two varieties. It is closely related to Pinus patula and has been successfully crossed with it. The tree is typically found in cool, high-altitude areas with moderate rainfall. It is not very frost-resistant and is often found mixed with other tree species. Pinus greggii has been introduced in several countries, including Brazil, South Africa, and Italy, for commercial purposes. Its cultivation and introduction have been documented in various literature, including the Tropical Tree Seed Manual and Pines of Silvicultural Importance.
