Pinus glabra, also known as the spruce pine, is a medium-sized tree commonly found in the coastal plains of the southern United States. It can reach heights of 20 to 40 meters and has needle-like leaves that grow in bundles of two. The cones of this tree are small and slender, with weak prickles that are shed quickly. Unlike other pine species, Pinus glabra is typically found as scattered trees in moist woodland habitats, rather than in pure pine forests. This is because it has adapted to be more shade tolerant, allowing it to thrive in mixed hardwood forests. It is found in a range from southern South Carolina to northern Florida and west to southern Louisiana.
