Pinus canariensis, also known as the Canary Island pine, is a large evergreen tree that is native and endemic to the outer Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. It can grow up to 30-40 meters tall and has needle-like leaves in bundles of three. The cones of this tree are glossy chestnut-brown and can remain closed for several years. It is closely related to other Mediterranean pines and the chir pine from the Himalayas. This species is drought-tolerant and can survive in a wide range of rainfall conditions. It is also known for its fire-resistant properties. The tree has been used for various purposes, including as a source of water and for its aromatic and durable wood. It is also a popular ornamental tree in warmer climates. Pinus canariensis is the vegetable symbol of the island of La Palma.
