Pinus ayacahuite, also known as ayacahuite pine or Mexican white pine, is a species of pine tree native to southern Mexico and western Central America. It grows in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains and the Eje Volcánico Transversal, and can be found in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. This tree prefers moist areas with summer rainfalls and needs full sun and well-drained soil. It can tolerate temperatures ranging from subtropical to cool climates. Pinus ayacahuite is a large tree, growing up to 50 meters tall, with long and slender cones and small seeds. It is moderately susceptible to white pine blister rust, but has been successfully cultivated for ornamental and commercial purposes in various regions around the world, including Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Brazil, India, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and the British Isles. Despite its tropical origins, it can withstand cold temperatures and is often grown as an ornamental tree in parks. The wood of Pinus ayacahuite is valuable and used for construction work.
