Picea martinezii, also known as the Martinez spruce, is a medium-sized evergreen tree found in northeast Mexico. It grows up to 35 meters tall and has a trunk diameter of 1 meter. This tree is typically found in mountain valleys near streams, where the soil has higher moisture levels than the surrounding area. The bark is thin and scaly, and the crown is conic with drooping branches. The leaves are needle-like and sharp, while the cones are pendulous and cylindrical. The Martinez spruce was only discovered in 1981 and is critically endangered, with only two small populations remaining. It is closely related to the Chihuahua spruce, but can be distinguished by its longer, green leaves and larger cones. This tree is highly valued for its attractive appearance and heat tolerance, and is often planted as an ornamental tree in botanical gardens. It is named after the Mexican botanist Maximino Martínez.
