Picea engelmannii, also known as Engelmann spruce, is a species of spruce native to western North America. It is a medium to large evergreen tree, growing up to 65 meters tall with a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 meters. It has a narrow conic crown and needle-like leaves that have a pungent odor when crushed. The tree produces purple cones in the spring, which release yellow pollen when windy. It is mostly found in high-elevation mountain areas, but can also be found in watered canyons. Engelmann spruce is an important source of wood for paper-making and construction, and its slow-grown wood is used to make musical instruments. It is also used as a Christmas tree and has medicinal uses for Native Americans. The tree is susceptible to damage from wind, fire, and pests, but is able to regenerate after disturbances. It hybridizes with white spruce and Sitka spruce in certain areas.
