The western larch is a species of larch native to the mountains of western North America. It is the most productive of the three species of larch native to North America, reaching heights of 30 to 60 meters. The tree has a narrow conic crown and needle-like leaves that turn bright yellow in the fall. Its seed cones are ovoid-cylindric and can remain on the tree for many years. The western larch grows in the drainage of the Columbia River and is very cold tolerant. It is an important food source for birds and small animals. In response to climate change, the government of British Columbia has implemented an assisted migration program for the western larch to a new habitat in northern BC. The tree has various uses, including medicinal, as a health supplement, and for its wood, which is highly prized for yacht building and firewood.
