Ephedra monosperma, also known as Ephedra minima or dan zi ma huang, is a small shrub in the Ephedraceae family. It is found in rocky slopes and dry areas from China to Siberia. Its extract, ephedrine, has been used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine for thousands of years. However, it has been banned in the USA since 1994 due to its adverse effects. The plant has woody stems, opposite leaves, and cone-shaped flowers that mature into fleshy, red, and glucose cones. It is mainly distributed in Asian countries such as China, Tibet, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia. In traditional medicine, it is used for various purposes such as increasing heart rate and blood pressure, bronchodilation, and CNS stimulation. However, it has also been used in street drugs and nutritional supplements, leading to its ban in the USA. In Mongolia, the dried seed-cones are used to make tea.
