Encephalartos lehmannii, also known as the Karoo cycad, is a low-growing palm-like cycad that is native to South Africa. It is named after German botanist Prof J.G.C. Lehmann, who studied cycads and published a book about them in 1834. This species is listed as near threatened on the IUCN Red List. It can grow up to two meters tall with a trunk diameter of up to 45 centimeters and has blue or silver leaves with smooth margins. The male and female cones are green or brown and can reach lengths of up to 35 and 50 centimeters, respectively. Encephalartos lehmannii is mainly found in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where it thrives on dry sandstone slopes and ridges among low succulent herbs and shrubs. Its ability to survive in such a harsh environment showcases the resilience of the cycad species.
