Austrotaxus spicata, also known as the New Caledonia yew or southern yew, is a unique species of yew that is endemic to the island of New Caledonia. It is the only species in its genus, and is closely related to other yews in the genera Taxus and Pseudotaxus. This dioecious coniferous shrub or small tree can reach heights of up to 20 meters and has distinctive reddish bark and long, lanceolate leaves. Its seed cones are drupe-like and have a fleshy aril surrounding the single seed. Austrotaxus spicata can be easily distinguished from other yews by its longer leaves and larger seeds. It is classified as a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and overharvesting for its medicinal properties.
