Juniperus indica, also known as the black juniper, is a type of juniper plant found in high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, including Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. It is known for being the highest elevation woody plant, with some reports of it growing up to 5,200 meters in southern Tibet. This shrub can reach heights of 50-200 centimeters and has horizontal branches. Its leaves are dark gray-green and can be either scale-like or needle-like, depending on the age of the plant. The plant is dioecious, meaning that male and female cones are found on separate plants. The mature seed cones are small, glossy black, and contain a single seed, which is dispersed by birds that eat the cones and excrete the seeds in their droppings.
