Chamaecyparis thyoides, also known as Atlantic white cedar, is a species of conifer native to the Atlantic coast of North America. It can be found from southern Maine to Georgia and along the Gulf of Mexico coast from Florida to Mississippi. This tree is one of two species of Chamaecyparis found in North America, with the other being C. lawsoniana on the West Coast. There are two subspecies, C. thyoides thyoides and C. thyoides henryae, which are found in geographically isolated areas. This tree is typically found in forested wetlands and is associated with a variety of other wetland species due to its wide range. However, its populations have decreased due to altered fire regimes, logging, and draining of wetlands. Atlantic white cedar is protected in several national wildlife refuges and forests, but it is still at risk of extirpation in some states. This tree is an obligate wetland species, meaning it requires saturated soil and acidic conditions to thrive. It is often found with red maple and black gum trees, as well as sphagnum mosses. The caterpillar of the Hessel's Hairstreak butterfly feeds exclusively on this tree, using its green
