Retrophyllum vitiense is a large evergreen rainforest tree found in Southeast Asia and the southwestern Pacific, specifically in Fiji, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. It has an erect trunk with a clear bole and a buttressed base, and a crown that can be pyramidal or rounded. The bark is initially brown and smooth but becomes gray and develops vertical fissures with age. The leaves are mostly flat with a decurrent base and a spreading blade, but cone-bearing shoots have smaller scale-like leaves. The tree is dioecious, with male pollen cones and female seed cones. It grows in tropical lowland and montane rainforests, often as an emergent tree above the canopy. It is commonly found with other tropical conifers such as Podocarpus, Dacrycarpus, Dacrydium, and Agathis.
