Podocarpus henkelii, also known as Henkel's yellowwood, is a South African conifer that is grown for its attractive form and foliage. It is easily recognizable by its long, drooping leaves and can reach heights of up to 30m. This tree is dioecious, with separate male and female trees, and produces fruit-like seeds that are eaten and distributed by birds. It is found in the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa and is also grown in gardens throughout the country. Henkel's yellowwood is named after Caesar Carl Hans Henkel and is protected in South Africa. It is easy to cultivate and can be propagated from seed, but grows best in deep, moist soil. Extracts from this tree have shown potential in treating canine distemper virus and lumpy skin disease virus.
