Sphagnum fuscum, also known as the rusty bogmoss or rusty peat moss, is a type of peat moss commonly found in Norway, Sweden, North America, the United Kingdom, and parts of Europe. It has brown to greenish brown color and slender stems, and forms thread-like branches within hummocks. This species prefers older, drier bogs and acidic soils, and is able to colonize at high elevations. However, it is facing endangerment due to habitat loss and is under protection in many countries. Sphagnum fuscum is associated with other species of Sphagnum and is easily distinguishable by its reddish brown color. It is commonly found in boreal forests and marshlands, and has been used for various purposes, including as an indicator of environmental conditions and for medicinal purposes.
