Ambuchanania leucobryoides is a unique species of moss found only in Tasmania. It is the only species in its genus, named after the botanist who first collected it in 1987. Originally thought to be a type of Sphagnum moss, it is now recognized as a separate genus due to its elongated antheridia. This moss is found exclusively in the Wilderness World Heritage Area of south-west Tasmania, where it grows on white quartzitic sand and on the edges of buttongrass sedge land. It is often found in association with other species such as Leptocarpus tenax, Chordifex hookeri, and Actinotus suffocatus. Due to its limited distribution, A. leucobryoides is considered a rare species and is protected under the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act.
