Asterella drummondii is a liverwort that was first described in 1846 and named after James Drummond. It is found in all states of Australia, particularly in semi-arid areas. This liverwort has a unique appearance, with a single tongue-like thallus or sometimes a star-shaped rosette with a red/black margin. When dry, the thallus rolls up to reveal dark wavy margins. Fruiting bodies can be found on the surface of the thallus, hanging down with a white frill on the lower edge. It is commonly found on soil crusts or organic material in wet and dry habitats.
