Spruceanthus theobromae is a liverwort species that is found only in Ecuador. It is part of the Lejeuneaceae family and is typically found in lowland evergreen forests. However, its habitat is being threatened by loss of land. In 2000, the IUCN assessed the species and found that it was critically endangered, with only five known tree trunks remaining at one site. However, a 2001 study discovered the species on 12 different cacao plantations across a larger area, leading to the conclusion that it should be classified as Near Threatened rather than currently endangered.
