Leiomitra julacea is a unique liverwort species found only in New Zealand, specifically on Stewart Island and the southern West Coast Region of the South Island. It grows on rocky outcrops at an elevation of around 130 m. This plant has a spongy appearance, resembling a mass of interwoven cilia, and has a creeping growth habit. Its shoots can reach up to 2 mm in width and its leaves are widely spread with sharply arched lobes towards the shoot tip. The leaf disc is made up of 5-6 cells. The only other known species of Leiomitra in New Zealand, L. lanata, has a yellow-green color and a leaf disc made up of 6-10 cells.
