Lophocolea heterophylla, also known as the variable-leaved crestwort, is a liverwort species that belongs to the largest liverwort order, Jungermanniales. It has pale green translucent leaves that are bilobed at the bottom of the stem, but can become smooth or notched further up. It has a strong scent and can grow up to 3mm wide. This plant is often found in a fertile state in the British Isles, with structures for asexual reproduction sometimes present on the edges of its leaves and bracts. It is most commonly found in the south of Britain, particularly in England, but can also be found in other parts of the British Isles. The variable-leaved crestwort is typically found at the base of trees, fallen wood, soil, leaf litter, and roots in various types of woodland, with ancient woodland being a key habitat in the west and north. It can be distinguished from similar species in Britain by its distinct bilobed leaves at the base of the stem.
