Rhabdoweisia (Bruch & Schimp.) is a moss placed in Rhabdoweisiaceae (Dicranales), previously in Dicranaceae (Goffinet & Shaw, 2002; Hedenäs, 1994). About twelve species are accepted (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). It occurs across temperate–boreal zones, with populations in the Himalaya, eastern Asia, New Zealand and southern Africa, ranging from calcareous rock to cliffs (Liu et al., 2022). The type species, Rhabdoweisia fugax (Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp., was designated by Hedenäs (1994) and remains the generic reference.

Rhabdoweisia forms cushion‑like mats of slender stems. Leaves are narrow, lanceolate with a hyaline base, revolute margins and a single costa. The peristome, when present, is a single row of sixteen delicate teeth, reduced, giving the capsule a smooth mouth (Goffinet & Shaw, 2002). Capsules are short, erect, operculate; the annulus is conspicuous and exothecial cells are thick‑walled.

The centre of diversity lies in temperate Europe and eastern Asia, with endemics such as the Himalayan R. sikkimensis and New Zealand R. williamsii. Species prefer shaded, moist calcareous substrates on cliffs, boulder fields and shaded banks from sea level to 3 500 m (Liu et al., 2022). Boreal‑temperate lineages and Southern‑Hemisphere relicts indicate both long‑distance dispersal and ancient vicariance.

Rhabdoweisia reproduces sexually through water‑borne sperm that swim to archegonia; most species are dioecious or autoicous. Spores are wind‑dispersed after the operculate capsule opens, and vegetative propagation by fragmentation of the compact cushions is common. No specialised pollination mechanisms have been documented.

Authors recognized informal groups based on leaf curvature (Hedenäs, 1994), but molecular phylogenies show these groups are not monophyletic (Liu et al., 2022). R. decurrens is now synonymous with R. crispatella (Hedenäs, 1994) and R. humicola reduced to that species (WFO, 2024). Some regional floras retain it in Dicranaceae subfamily Rhabdoweisioideae (Hedenäs, 1994), whereas modern treatments place it in Rhabdoweisiaceae (Goffinet & Shaw, 2002). These divergent placements reflect ongoing uncertainty.

Rhabdoweisia has little economic significance. A few compact species appear in alpine moss gardens for their tidy habit, but they are not cultivated on a commercial scale. The genus is not considered a weed or invasive and provides no timber or crop value.

Most species are widespread and not currently threatened, yet several narrow endemics such as the Himalayan R. sikkimensis may be vulnerable to climate‑induced habitat loss, and insufficient sampling hampers IUCN assessments. Future research should clarify species limits, improve distribution data and evaluate conservation needs (Liu et al., 2022).
