Roscoea auriculata is a perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the ginger family and is native to the eastern Himalayas, specifically Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sikkim. Unlike most members of the ginger family, R. auriculata can survive in colder mountainous regions. It is often grown as an ornamental plant in gardens. The plant has a unique growth pattern, with pseudostems produced from the tightly wrapped bases of its leaves. It produces purple or white flowers between June and August, with ear-shaped outgrowths at the junction of the leaf blades and sheaths. R. auriculata is closely related to R. alpina and is part of the Himalayan clade of the genus Roscoea. It is commonly grown in rock gardens and requires a sunny position with well-drained soil. The plant was included in a Royal Horticultural Society trial and received the Award of Garden Merit for its hardiness and long flowering season.
